Overview
A small, mountainous island at the southern end of the Windward Islands, Grenada is known as the Isle of Spice for its nutmeg, mace and cocoa. It pairs rainforest, waterfalls and a deep harbour with the long Grand Anse Beach. It is quieter and less developed than nearby Barbados or Saint Lucia.
Airports
Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) serves St. George's and handles direct flights from North America, the UK and the Caribbean. Lauriston Airport (CRU) serves the island of Carriacou, about 1 km from Hillsborough. Both are small, and inter-island travel is by regional airline or ferry.
Main cities
St. George's is the capital, built around a horseshoe-shaped harbour and one of the more attractive town settings in the Caribbean. Gouyave on the west coast is a fishing town known for its Friday fish fry, and Grenville is the main town on the east coast. Victoria is a small north-coast settlement. Hillsborough is the main town of Carriacou, where Windward is known for boatbuilding.
Places to go
Grand Anse Beach, just south of St. George's, is a roughly 3 km stretch of sand and the island's main beach. The Molinière Underwater Sculpture Park is a dive and snorkel site within a marine protected area off the west coast. Grand Étang National Park in the central highlands contains a crater lake and forest trails, and Annandale Falls and Concord Falls are roadside and hike-in waterfalls. Levera Beach in the north is a turtle-nesting beach, and the Seven Sisters Falls are reached by a guided hike. Carriacou and tiny Petite Martinique lie to the north of Grenada.
