Overview
A mountainous Windward Island, Saint Lucia is known for the twin Pitons, a drive-in volcano and dense rainforest. It has both large resorts in the north and quieter, more scenic areas in the south. It is a common stop on Eastern Caribbean cruise routes.
Airports
Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) at Vieux Fort in the south handles long-haul flights from North America and Europe. George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU) near Castries in the north handles regional flights and smaller aircraft. The two airports are at opposite ends of the island, roughly 1.5 hours apart by road.
Main cities
Castries is the capital, on the northwest coast, and the main cruise port. Gros Islet, north of Castries, includes Rodney Bay and the island's main resort strip. Soufrière in the southwest is the old French capital and the base for the Pitons and the volcano. Vieux Fort in the south surrounds the international airport. Marigot Bay, midway down the west coast, is a sheltered harbour.
Places to go
The Pitons, Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rise directly from the sea near Soufrière and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Gros Piton can be climbed with a guide. The Sulphur Springs near Soufrière is a drive-in volcano with mud baths, and Diamond Falls and the adjacent botanical gardens are nearby. Pigeon Island National Landmark, north of Castries, has a fort and viewpoints. Reduit Beach at Rodney Bay is the main swimming beach, and Anse Chastanet has a reef used for diving. The Tet Paul Nature Trail gives close views of the Pitons, and the central rainforest is used for hiking.
