Overview
A two-island nation just off Venezuela, culturally closer to South America and with an economy built on oil and gas rather than tourism. Trinidad has rainforest, birdlife and a lively carnival, while Tobago is quieter, with reef-fringed beaches. It is the southernmost of the Caribbean island nations.
Airports
Piarco International Airport (POS) serves Port of Spain on Trinidad and is the main gateway. A.N.R. Robinson International Airport (TAB), formerly Crown Point, serves Scarborough on Tobago. A short domestic flight links the two islands, and there is also a passenger ferry.
Main cities
Port of Spain is the capital, on Trinidad's northwest coast, with the Queen's Park Savannah and the main carnival and business activity. San Fernando is the second city and industrial centre in the south. Chaguanas is a busy market town in central Trinidad. On Tobago, Scarborough is the capital and Crown Point is the resort and airport area.
Places to go
Maracas Bay on Trinidad's north coast is the island's best-known beach, reached over the Northern Range. The Pitch Lake at La Brea is a natural asphalt lake and one of the largest in the world. The Caroni Swamp is a bird sanctuary known for scarlet ibis roosting at dusk, and the Asa Wright Nature Centre sits in the northern rainforest. On Tobago, Pigeon Point and Store Bay are the main beaches, and the Nylon Pool and Buccoo Reef are shallow-water boat trips. Little Tobago, off Tobago's northeast coast, is a seabird sanctuary, and Argyle Waterfall is a walk from the Windward Road.
