Overview

Bermuda is a subtropical Atlantic archipelago roughly 1,000 km east of the United States, not part of the Caribbean proper. It is known for pink-sand beaches, pastel architecture, tidy roads and a strong sailing and finance culture. The Gulf Stream keeps it warm enough for year-round travel, though winters are cooler and wetter than the Caribbean.

Airports

L.F. Wade International Airport (BDA), in St. George's Parish at the island's east end, serves the whole territory and is the only airport. It has direct flights from several US East Coast cities, Toronto and London, with the shortest hops from the US taking about two hours. The airport is connected to the rest of the island by bus, taxi and ferry.

Main cities

Hamilton is the capital, on the central south shore, and its Front Street waterfront holds most of the shops, banks and ferry terminals. St. George's, at the east end, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest continuously inhabited English town in the New World. Other notable settlements are Somerset Village in the west and Flatt's Village and St. David's in the centre and east.

Places to go

Horseshoe Bay is the famous south-shore beach, with Warwick Long Bay, Jobson's Cove and Elbow Beach along the same stretch. Tobacco Bay near St. George's is calm and shallow, while Clearwater Beach and Cooper's Island Nature Reserve sit at the eastern tip. Spittal Pond Nature Reserve protects wetland and coastal habitat, and the Royal Naval Dockyard in the west holds the National Museum and the main cruise port.
