Overview

A two-island federation, Saint Kitts and Nevis pairs a larger, more developed island with a small, quieter one a short ferry ride away. Saint Kitts has the sugar and fort heritage, while Nevis is known for small resorts and uncrowded beaches. Both islands are volcanic and green.

Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) serves Basseterre on Saint Kitts and handles international flights from North America and the UK. Vance W. Amory International Airport (NEV) serves Charlestown on Nevis, mostly with regional flights. A passenger ferry links the two islands in about 45 minutes.

Main cities

Basseterre is the capital, on Saint Kitts, with a colonial-era circus and a cruise port. Charlestown is the capital of Nevis, with Georgian buildings and the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton. Sandy Point Town and Dieppe Bay Town are small settlements on Saint Kitts's northwest coast. Gingerland is a village on the slopes of Nevis Peak.

Places to go

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park on Saint Kitts is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a large restored 17th- and 18th-century fortress. Timothy Hill on the southeast peninsula gives a view of the Atlantic and Caribbean meeting. Frigate Bay and South Friars Bay are the main beaches on Saint Kitts, and Mount Liamuiga is the island's highest peak. On Nevis, Pinney's Beach runs along the west coast near Charlestown, while Oualie Beach and the Botanical Gardens of Nevis are close by, and Nevis Peak is the island's central volcano. Romney Manor, near Old Road Town, holds the Caribelle Batik workshop.
