Overview
Uruguay is a small, stable country between Argentina and Brazil whose Atlantic coast and gaucho countryside are its main draws. It is often described as the most European-feeling country in South America, with a high standard of living and a low-key pace. Its beach resorts, colonial towns and wine and beef culture make it an easy add-on to a trip to Buenos Aires.
Airports
Carrasco International Airport (MVD), about 20 km from central Montevideo, is the country's main international gateway. Laguna del Sauce International Airport (PDP) serves Punta del Este and the eastern beaches. Smaller airports include Nueva Hespérides International Airport (STY) at Salto in the northwest and Rivera International Airport (RVY) on the Brazilian border.
Main cities
Montevideo is the capital and home to about half the population, with a historic old town and the Mercado del Puerto. Punta del Este is the country's best-known beach resort, busy in summer and quiet in winter. Colonia del Sacramento is a well-preserved Portuguese colonial town and a short ferry ride from Buenos Aires. Salto and Paysandú are the main cities of the interior, near the hot springs.
Places to go
Colonia del Sacramento's Barrio Histórico is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most visited historic town in the country. The eastern coast from Punta del Este to Punta del Diablo includes the quiet village of José Ignacio and the bohemian Cabo Polonio, with its dunes and sea-lion colony. The wine region around Canelones produces Tannat, the country's signature grape. The hot springs near Salto in the northwest are a long-established domestic holiday destination.
